About this artwork
This cubic sculpture pays homage to the cover of Bauhaus magazine, Year 3, No. 1, published in 1929, with the logo and cover design by Joost Schmidt. The work translates the period graphic design into a three-dimensional metal and acrylic-glass object for indoor display.
Bauhaus magazine began periodic publication following the inauguration of the new Bauhaus building in Dessau on 4 December 1926. Joost Schmidt was responsible for its design, and from 1929 the lettering appeared in white within a black rectangular form. That historic cover provides the subject for the transparent image held inside this hand-welded frame.
The sculpture may stand on a table, desk or shelf, or hang on a wall using the supplied hook. Natural or artificial lighting can cast geometric lines and shadows around the object, extending the composition beyond its 13 cm cubic frame.
